Overview
The Sharks Cove snorkel rental from Active Oahu Tours is a gear package, not a tour: $38 for 2 hours or $49 for 4 buys a mask, fins, vest, dry bag and route tips collected in Kailua before you drive north. It suits summer visitors already passing Kailua; the drawback is the hour-long detour and no lifeguard at the cove.
Highlights
- $38 for 2 hours, $49 for 4 hours, $15 for children 6-13; 15% off for groups of 4 or more with code 15OFFGROUPS (operator site, October 2026).
- Mask, snorkel, fins, life vest, dry bag and a small bottle of baby shampoo for defogging included; the operator gives route tips for Sharks Cove, Three Tables and the south side of Waimea Bay.
- Sharks Cove has a rocky entry and lava tubes; Three Tables, a short walk away, has a sandy entry the operator recommends for beginners.
- No lifeguard on duty, and surf season October to April (largest December to February) makes the cove unsafe on big-swell days.
- Parking at Pupukea Beach Park is limited; the operator advises arriving in the morning.
What to Expect
- Collect the gear at the Active Oahu Tours shop at 134B Hamakua Dr., Kailua; the operator notes this is on the way for people driving up from Honolulu.
- Drive to Pupukea Beach Park on the North Shore and park early; if the lot is full you park down the road and walk.
- Enter Sharks Cove over rocks, using hands and feet, and snorkel the perimeter for fish, urchins, lava tubes and sometimes turtles or rays; small children can use the Pupukea tide pools on the south side instead.
- Walk to Three Tables for a sandy entry, live coral and turtles around the rock formations.
- On the 4-hour option, continue about a quarter mile to the south side of Waimea Bay for coral patches and boulder fields.
- Rinse at the public showers by the parking lot and return the gear to Kailua.
