Overview
The self-guided Kaneohe Bay kayak and snorkel from Active Oahu Tours supplies a tandem kayak, snorkel set and floating leash for 4 hours at about $91: collect the gear in Kailua, drive to the bay and paddle 15-20 minutes to the reef. It suits confident swimmers who can re-enter a kayak; the drawback is murky water near shore, no guide.
Highlights
- Paddle 15-20 minutes from the launch to the first reef inside Kaneohe Bay, which is sheltered by a barrier reef (Greetwell and Rezdy listings).
- Snorkel along the reef edge while towing the kayak on a floating leash, or watch the reef from the kayak.
- About $91 per visitor and $80 for kamaaina/military on Greetwell; a reseller lists 4-hour slots at 8, 9, 11 AM and 12, 2, 3 PM, Monday to Saturday (October 2026).
- Kayak, paddle, seat back, life jacket, snorkel set, two leashes, 15-liter dry bag and roof straps included.
- Optional 15-minute paddle north to the Waikane Pier area used in the film 50 First Dates; landing on the private shoreline is not allowed.
What to Expect
- Arrive 15 minutes before your slot at the Kailua storefront, sign the waiver and receive the kayak, snorkel gear, roof pads, straps and directions to the launch.
- Strap the kayak to your 4-door car with staff help and drive to the launch on Kaneohe Bay; the Rezdy listing names the Waiahole Nursery and Garden Center parking lot, about 20 minutes from Heeia Kea Boat Harbor.
- Paddle out past the murky shallows near the stream mouth into clearer water, reaching the nearest reef in about 15-20 minutes.
- Clip the kayak to the floating leash and snorkel along the reef edges, climbing back into the kayak from the water when you are done.
- Optionally paddle about 15 minutes north toward the Waikane Pier area, staying off the private shoreline.
- Paddle back, load the kayak and return the gear to Kailua within the 4-hour window.
